CLUTCH TROUBLESHOOTING !

Clutch problems generally fall into one of six classifications.
Here is what to check for and do when you meet clutch failure.

Symptoms

Possible remedy

A. Clutch does not release.

  1. Excessive lost motion in clutch 
     pedal travel.
  2. Foreign matter on clutch disc facings:
     oil, grease, dirt.
  3. Improper or bent clutch disc.
     Or installed backwards.
  4. Disc binds on clutch shaft.
  5. Transmission not properly aligned 
     with clutch housing.
  6. Pilot bushing jam onto clutch shaft.
  7. Pressure play  or improper release
     match for disc thickness.
    
  1. Adjust clutch linkage free play.
  2. Eliminate entry of foreign matter.
     Clean or replace affected members.
  3. Replace with correct part.
     Install carefully.
  4. Assure free, snug, sliding motion
     of disc on clutch shaft splines.
  5. Clean joining surfaces.
     Draw units up squarely before locking
     fasteners or other mountings,
     heavy accessories.
  6. Remove burrs,  nicks on  clutch shaft.
     Test bushing's free-turningsupport
     before installing transmission.
     Carefully lubricate recess infront of
     bushing or pilot bearing.
  7. Replace plate or plate and disc
     with factory matched assembly.

B. Clutch slips when fully engaged.

  8. Lack of free play at clutch pedal 
     or linkage.
  9. Worn facings on clutch disc
 10. Weak or broken springs in pressure plate,
     or plate and/or flywheel scored.
 11. Clutch disc broken at hub
 12. Binding pressure plate release fingers
     do not return. See 2 above.
    
  8. Adjust to insure complete return of
     pressure plate release imgers.
  9. Replace disc
 10. Replace plate and/or flywheel.
     Or machine flyweel surface.
 11. Replace disc
 12. Free release fingers

C. Clutch chatter

 See 2, above
 13. Clutch disc facings glazed or worn
 14. Improper pressure plate release finger
     adjustment or weak springs
 15. Clutch disc bent
 16. Loose or worn universal joint or
     joint flange in driveline.
 17. Transmission clutch shaft splines worn.

 13. Replace or reline disc
 14. Replace or rebuild and adjust plate.
 15. Replace disc
 16. Tighten or replace as necessary
 17. Replace shaft

D. Clutch grabs

 See 2,3,4,5,10,13,14. above
 18. clutch pedal or pedal linkage action binding
 19. Engine mountings loose or worn
 20. Brakes drag
    
 18. Free and lubricate linkage
 19. Tighten or replace as necessary
 20. Adjust brakes or correct as necessary

E. Clutch pedal too hard

 21. Improper pedal return spring.
 22. Improper adjustment of pedal return
     over-center spring
 23. Binding release bearing sleeve
 24. Worn clutch shaft bearing
     (front of transmission)
 25. Dry or binding clutch linkage
 26. pedal interference with floormat
     or foot board
    
 21. Replace spring
 22. Adjust spring linkage
 23. Free sleeve lubricate lightly with
     heat-resistant grease
 24. Replace bearing. Assure tight
     bearing seal in transmission housing
 25. Free linkage and lubricate
 26. Cut away as necessary.
 Guard extended hoin.
 

F. Clutch rattle

 27. Weak or broken release lever
     anti-ratio springs
 28. Worn splines on clutch shaft
     and/or clutch disc hub.
 29. Dry or worn release bearing
 30. Improper pedal free play adjustment
 31. Excessive backlash in transmission
     or drive shaft
    
 27. Replace spring or pressure plate
 28. Replace as necessary.
 29. Lubricate or replace
 30. Adjust free play
 31. Correct as necessary
