CLUTCH TROUBLESHOOTING !
Clutch problems generally fall into one of six classifications.
Here is what to check for and do when you meet clutch failure.
|
Symptoms |
Probable Cause |
Possible remedy |
|
A. Clutch does not release. |
1. Excessive lost motion in clutch pedal travel. 2. Foreign matter on clutch disc facings: oil, grease, dirt. 3. Improper or bent clutch disc. Or installed backwards. 4. Disc binds on clutch shaft. 5. Transmission not properly aligned with clutch housing. 6. Pilot bushing jam onto clutch shaft. 7. Pressure play or improper release match for disc thickness. |
1. Adjust clutch linkage free play. 2. Eliminate entry of foreign matter. Clean or replace affected members. 3. Replace with correct part. Install carefully. 4. Assure free, snug, sliding motion of disc on clutch shaft splines. 5. Clean joining surfaces. Draw units up squarely before locking fasteners or other mountings, heavy accessories. 6. Remove burrs, nicks on clutch shaft. Test bushing's free-turningsupport before installing transmission. Carefully lubricate recess infront of bushing or pilot bearing. 7. Replace plate or plate and disc with factory matched assembly. |
|
B. Clutch slips when fully engaged. |
8. Lack of free play at clutch pedal or linkage. 9. Worn facings on clutch disc 10. Weak or broken springs in pressure plate, or plate and/or flywheel scored. 11. Clutch disc broken at hub 12. Binding pressure plate release fingers do not return. See 2 above. |
8. Adjust to insure complete return of pressure plate release imgers. 9. Replace disc 10. Replace plate and/or flywheel. Or machine flyweel surface. 11. Replace disc 12. Free release fingers |
|
C. Clutch chatter |
See 2, above 13. Clutch disc facings glazed or worn 14. Improper pressure plate release finger adjustment or weak springs 15. Clutch disc bent 16. Loose or worn universal joint or joint flange in driveline. 17. Transmission clutch shaft splines worn. |
See 4, above 13. Replace or reline disc 14. Replace or rebuild and adjust plate. 15. Replace disc 16. Tighten or replace as necessary 17. Replace shaft |
|
D. Clutch grabs |
See 2,3,4,5,10,13,14. above 18. clutch pedal or pedal linkage action binding 19. Engine mountings loose or worn 20. Brakes drag |
18. Free and lubricate linkage 19. Tighten or replace as necessary 20. Adjust brakes or correct as necessary |
|
E. Clutch pedal too hard |
21. Improper pedal return spring. 22. Improper adjustment of pedal return over-center spring 23. Binding release bearing sleeve 24. Worn clutch shaft bearing (front of transmission) 25. Dry or binding clutch linkage 26. pedal interference with floormat or foot board |
21. Replace spring 22. Adjust spring linkage 23. Free sleeve lubricate lightly with heat-resistant grease 24. Replace bearing. Assure tight bearing seal in transmission housing 25. Free linkage and lubricate 26. Cut away as necessary. Guard extended hoin. |
|
F. Clutch rattle |
27. Weak or broken release lever anti-ratio springs 28. Worn splines on clutch shaft and/or clutch disc hub. 29. Dry or worn release bearing 30. Improper pedal free play adjustment 31. Excessive backlash in transmission or drive shaft |
27. Replace spring or pressure plate 28. Replace as necessary. 29. Lubricate or replace 30. Adjust free play 31. Correct as necessary |
